A story with birth and dead – Moment

Critical reflection

All life forms are composed of one or more cells, and the scene of different periods of human beings is symbolized by the form of cell division, highlighting the diversity of human life in this world.

Life is death, and death is life. Human beings are born, developed, and continue from the cell, but that is only part of history. The film takes cells as a starting point, each cell division represents the birth of a life, and each cell reflects the moment of death in a period of time. Using digital scenes to show the stories and emotions I want to express. In this way, I hope to express the cycle of life and the reflection on life and death.


In this project, I tried to make this short film with the theme of life and death. From the concept and idea of the project to the conception and production of the storyboard, the final modeling and video presentation are all the results of my continuous efforts in the past two months.

This short film uses Blender and C4D to model the scene and some of the props, as well as some of the scene rendering, Zbrush to create details of key props, Houdinij to create special effects, METAHUMAN, Daz3D and MAYA for character creation, crafting and bone binding, and so on. Casadeur animates characters, Marvelous Designer makes character costumes, Spddetree creates tree assets, Substance Painter paints characters and key items, Ureal builds the scene and renders, Davinci, AE makes the final cut. Compositing and video output.

Through this project, I began to try to learn new software and conceive films from the director’s perspective, but there are still many shortcomings. I hope to present a strong sense of story and emotion to people through scene modeling in this video. The rhythm of the video and the connection between the pictures are still not satisfactory to me, and the lighting of some scenes and the material of the models are still rather stiff. The storyboard was not well executed during my production. In the process of production, I realized many shortcomings of myself, which also became the motivation for me to make continuous progress in the future. I believe that I can definitely present better digital art to people in the future.

After the basic composition of the scene, I began to make costumes for other characters, as well as key props, and put them into SP to draw materials.

In the first scene I conceived a medieval church scene, and before production I referred to a lot of Rembrandt’s paintings, learning about his lighting in the scene and the poses of different characters in the scene with a large number of people.


In the composition, I adopted a triangular composition to make the picture look more stable, and the actions of the characters made the picture more dramatic.

After making the character and animation, I start to make clothes for the character in Marvelous Designer. I refer to a lot of Gothic clothing. After the model is made, I import it into Substance Painter to paint the material.
